How Does GreenSky Financing Work?

A plain-English walk-through of the GreenSky® loan process, from your contractor's quote to your final payment.

The Short Version

Quick answer

GreenSky financing works through your contractor. The contractor offers the GreenSky® program when you buy a project, you apply online, in the app or by phone, a participating bank makes the credit decision, and after approval you authorize payments to the contractor from your new account. You then repay GreenSky Servicing, LLC in monthly installments.

Unlike a personal loan, GreenSky is designed for point-of-sale use. You do not shop for a GreenSky loan and then find a contractor; you find a contractor who already offers GreenSky, and the financing becomes part of the sale.

That structure explains most of what borrowers like about the program, like the speed and convenience, and most of what they complain about: limited choice, contractor-driven paperwork and plan terms that are easy to skim past.

Who Does What in a GreenSky Loan

Four parties are involved, and knowing which one handles what saves a lot of wasted phone calls later.

GreenSky, LLC itself is a technology company, not a bank. Its disclosures state that GreenSky, LLC and GreenSky Servicing, LLC are not lenders and that all credit decisions and loan terms are determined by program lenders.

Step-by-Step: How GreenSky Financing Works

  1. Find a participating merchant

Ask your contractor whether they are enrolled in the GreenSky® program and which plans they carry. Merchants choose from a menu of plans, so availability differs from one company to the next.

  2. Choose a plan and project amount

Your contractor presents options, such as an 18-month deferred-interest promotion or a longer fixed-rate plan. Write down the plan number, promotional end date and standard APR.

  3. Prequalify (optional)

Where the merchant supports it, a prequalification request uses a soft credit inquiry, so you can see a likely limit and APR without affecting your score.

  4. Submit the application

Apply online through the merchant link, in the GreenSky mobile app, or by phone with a program representative. You provide identity, income and housing details. This step triggers a hard inquiry.

  5. Get a credit decision

The participating lender returns a decision, usually within minutes. If approved, you receive your account number, credit limit and plan terms.

  6. Authorize payment to the contractor

When the work, or a stage of it, is ready to be paid, you approve the charge. Keep the confirmation.

  7. Make monthly payments

Your first statement comes from GreenSky Servicing. Pay through the official portal, app, phone or mail.

Ways to Apply for GreenSky

According to GreenSky's merchant FAQ, applications are accepted only electronically. Paper applications, including fax and email submissions, are not accepted.

Online

Through the link or QR code your contractor provides, or inside contractor software such as estimating and invoicing tools that integrate GreenSky.

Mobile app

The official GreenSky app lets merchants start applications and lets approved borrowers manage accounts.

By phone

A GreenSky program representative can take the application electronically over the phone.

You will typically need your Social Security number, date of birth, annual income, housing payment and the merchant's information. NerdWallet reports that documents such as bank statements or W-2s usually are not required.

How Funds Reach Your Contractor

GreenSky loans do not land in your checking account. Proceeds are paid directly to the merchant after you authorize the transaction. This protects the loan from being used elsewhere, but it also means you cannot use the approval with a different contractor.

Staged funding for bigger jobs

For projects that run over weeks, GreenSky offers staged funding. The merchant uses the GreenSky merchant portal to request progress payments up to a staged funding limit, and GreenSky's merchant materials note that staged funding can let customers finance the down payment rather than paying it in cash.

Only authorize what has been done. Approve each stage when the work for that stage is complete. If a merchant asks you to authorize the full amount before the job starts, ask why, and check your plan terms first.

Repaying a GreenSky Loan

Monthly statements come from GreenSky Servicing. How your payment is calculated depends on the plan:

  • Deferred-interest plans: the required minimum is often lower than what it takes to clear the balance before the promotion ends. Divide the amount financed by the number of promotional months to find the payment that actually avoids interest. Our deferred interest calculator does it for you.
  • Reduced-rate and fixed-rate plans: fixed monthly payments over the term. GreenSky brochures describe the loans as unsecured with fixed interest rates, so the non-promotional payment stays the same.

Payments can be made online, in the app, by phone at 866-936-0602, by mail, or through autopay. See Payment & Login for details.

Five Checks Before You Sign

  1. Ask for the plan in writing, including the promotional end date and the standard APR that applies afterward.
  2. Ask whether financing changes the price. Merchants pay a fee to offer promotional plans, and some build it into the quote. Compare a cash price if possible.
  3. Submit the application yourself, on your own device if you can.
  4. Set up autopay above the minimum if you are on a deferred-interest plan.
  5. Compare at least one alternative. A personal loan or HELOC may cost less for a long payoff. See GreenSky alternatives.

Compare home improvement financing from a network of lenders before you commit to a contractor plan.

Submitting the form connects you with third-party lenders, not GreenSky. No obligation to accept any offer.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does GreenSky approval take?

Most applicants receive a credit decision within minutes of submitting the application online, in the app or by phone. Funding to the contractor happens when you authorize a charge against your approved account.

Does GreenSky pay me or my contractor?

Your contractor. GreenSky loan proceeds are disbursed to the participating merchant after you authorize the transaction. You do not receive a deposit in your own bank account.

Can my contractor fill out the GreenSky application for me?

You should complete and submit the application yourself. The CFPB found in 2021 that some merchants had taken out GreenSky loans without consumers' authorization. Enter your own information, keep a copy of the terms and never share login codes.

What is GreenSky staged funding?

Staged funding lets a merchant request progress payments on a larger job, up to a staged funding limit, instead of receiving the whole amount at once. It can also let you finance the deposit so you do not need cash up front.

Can I pay off a GreenSky loan early?

Paying ahead of schedule is exactly how you avoid interest on a deferred-interest plan, and you can make extra payments through the portal, app or phone. Check your loan agreement for the prepayment terms that apply to your plan.
