Is GreenSky Legit?

Verdict

Yes. GreenSky is a legitimate, bank-backed loan program that has operated since 2006 and has financed purchases for millions of consumers. It also has a documented regulatory history: in 2021 the CFPB ordered it to refund or cancel up to $9 million in loans that merchants had set up without consumers' authorization.

So the honest answer is both: the program is real and widely used, and you should approach it with the same care you would give any loan offered by a salesperson in your living room.

The 2021 CFPB Action Against GreenSky

On July 12, 2021, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau announced a consent order against GreenSky, LLC. The Bureau found that GreenSky's practices enabled contractors and other merchants to take out loans on behalf of thousands of consumers who did not request or authorize them.

Up to $9M

In loans GreenSky was required to refund or cancel for harmed consumers.

$2.5M

Civil money penalty paid to the CFPB.

New controls

Procedures required to prevent future unauthorized loans.

The CFPB reported that some consumers said they never applied for a loan or had even heard of GreenSky before receiving statements and collection calls. Because loan proceeds go straight to the merchant, a consumer might not notice a loan until the bills arrive.

Common GreenSky Complaints

GreenSky has large volumes of mixed customer feedback on sites such as Trustpilot and WalletHub. Satisfied borrowers describe clear communication and genuinely interest-free promotions paid on time. The recurring complaints fall into a few groups:

Deferred interest surprises

Borrowers who paid the minimum and were charged interest back to day one when the promotion ended.

High total cost

Long terms at standard APRs that add thousands in finance charges.

Contractor-driven sales

Terms not explained by the salesperson, or applications completed on the contractor's device.

Service delays

Hold times and slow resolution of disputes, especially where the contractor is also involved.

How to Protect Yourself

  • Complete the application yourself and read the plan terms first
  • Write down the promotional end date and standard APR
  • Authorize payments only for work that is done
  • Pay enough each month to clear any deferred-interest balance
  • Check each statement for charges you did not approve
  • Only log in through greensky.com; ignore payment links in texts
